오래전 한국의 한 구글 유저가 세르게이 브린에게 메일을 보냈다고 한다. 구글 번역기의 품질이 좋지 않았기 때문이다. 세르게이는 그 메일을 받고 즉각 회의를 소집했다고 한다. 그 이후 구글 번역기의 품질을 올리겠다고 단언한지도 몇년이 흘렀다. 하지만 구글 번역기의 품질은 여전히 좋지 않다.
많은 부분을 기계에게 의존하는 시대가 되었다. 하지만 영원히 기계가 사람의 감성까지 따라 갈수는 없다고 생각한다. 특히 언어는 받아들이는 사람의 감성은 물론이고 문화, 자라온 배경이나 가치관이 모두 담겨져 있는 것이기 때문에 기계에 의존하는 것이 힘들다고 생각한다.
그런점에 있어서 이번에 베타 서비스를 오픈한 소셜 번역 서비스 '루아'는 신선하다. 주로 영어가 아닌 곳의 언어를 모국어로 쓰면서 영어를 잘 하는 분들이 번역에 많이 참가하실 것 같다. 아니면 그 반대여도 괜찮을 것 같다. 뭐 이런식으로 서비스를 이용하는 사람들이 번역을 하는 것이다. 초기에는 세계 여러나라의 글들을 영어로 번역하는 작업에 집중한다고 한다.
점점 서비스 활성화가 되면 다국어에서 영어 뿐 아니라 영어에서 다국어로 또 다국어에서 다국어로 번역이 왕성하게 이루어 질 것이다.
한나라의 뉴스를 전 세계 사람들이 함께 소비하게 되고, 언어 장벽도 많이 붕괴시킬 수 있는 잠재력을 가진 서비스다. 신선하고 재미있는 서비스인 것 같다. 잘 되었으면 좋겠다.
